A GUDETAMA CAFE IS OPENING IN BUENA PARK

Sanrio’s beloved anthropomorphic lazy egg is headed to Buena Park with the opening of Gudetama Cafe, as reported by Secret Los Angeles. The new cafe will open on May 4.

The Gudetama Cafe will be the first of its kind in Southern California, though a counterpart opened in Tokyo in 2019 but has since closed. Orange County cafe hasn’t shared its menu yet, but the cafe in Japan served an array of Gudetama-themed dishes and drinks like yellow curry rice enveloped in a bacon blanket and hot chocolate with a Gudetama marshmallow. In addition to food, the Japanese cafe offered a fully immersive experience with Gudetama decorations and merchandise available for purchase. There were also Gudetama cafes in Singapore and Osaka with a similar experience, but they have since closed.

Gudetama, which was created in 2013, is named after a portmanteau of lazy (gude gude) and egg (tamago) in Japanese. The perpetually languorous character has been called the “Hello Kitty of Japan’s millennial generation” and embraced with a fervor that has spawned an extensive supply of merchandise including home goods, collaborations with bag brand Baggu, and chopsticks.

The new Buena Park location will open in Buena Park Place, a mall in Anaheim. Initial exterior photos of the cafe have circulated on social media, showing a yolk-yellow paint job. Earlier this year, the Buena Park City Scoop also shared interior photos of the space showcasing a branded counter service area and wall decals.

On opening day, the cafe will be throwing a party with the first 100 guests in line receiving a VIP gift bag, and buy one get one free drinks all day.

Gudetama Cafe is located at 8340 La Palma Avenue, Buena Park, CA 90620, and will open at 11 a.m. on May 4th.
