BAYOU SAINT CAKE IS SUNSETTING ITS BAKERY OPERATIONS

Baker Bronwen Wyatt, who built a national following for her swirly, surrealist made-to-order cakes, has announced that her business Bayou Saint Cake will end its bakery operations at the end of May. Wyatt made the announcement on Instagram and elaborated on her decision in her Substack newsletter, writing that she never fully planned on a career as a cake entrepreneur — in fact, she’s always wanted to be an artist and a writer. “For the past two years I’ve been avoiding the growing chorus of whispers in my brain that said: I do not want to do this anymore,” Wyatt writes. The newsletter is worth a read in its entirety — in the meantime, cake orders for May will open sometime next week, and Wyatt still plans to offer classes and recipes online, adding that she’s “hoping to bring you more writing work soon.”

New Orleans chef Charly Pierre (of Fritai), who has been competing against 14 other chefs in the latest, Wisconsin-based season of Bravo’s Top Chef, won the Quickfire Challenge and $7500 in last night’s episode, whipping up a Creole chicken with ingredients he found at the Dane County Farmers Market. Ultimately, though, Pierre was sent home following the Elimination Challenge — Eater Austin has the full recap.

La Tia Cantina, a Metairie Mexican restaurant popular for its cocktails, is opening a second location on Oak Street later this summer, Nola.com reports. Aguasanta, as the new restaurant is called, will offer modern American fare with Mexican and Latin American influences — expect a seafood bar and roasted meats from a wood-fired oven, too.

A cafe with gluten-free dishes is open in Gretna

Cara and Evan Benson, the names behind New Orleans restaurants Toast and Tartine, have brought a new cafe with ample gluten-free options to Gretna, according to Nola.com. The Hen House menu isn’t entirely gluten-free — the Bensons are baking fresh sandwich bread, for one — but it’s highly customizable, offering gluten-free wraps and bread.
