Passover (known in Hebrew as “pesach”) begins Monday, April 22, and ends Tuesday, April 30. The holiday commemorates the exodus of the Jewish people from Egypt and their freedom from enslavement. During the eight-day period, those who observe the holiday don’t consume various foods, including certain meat and seafood, fermented foods, and chametz — leavened grains and food prohibited during the holiday. Families gather together to celebrate the Passover Seder, a ritual that features many symbolic foods, like matzo, charoset (a mixture of fruits and nuts), gefilte fish, brisket, and wine.
Restaurants, bakeries, and cafes are gearing up ahead of the holiday, and kosher restaurants in and around Houston have plenty to offer during the holiday season.
