IT’S A SPEAKEASY, IT’S A TAQUERIA — IT’S AUSTIN’S LATEST COMBINATION SPEAKEASY/TAQUERIA

Looking to slip away to Mexico City for some street tacos? Capture the experience without getting on a plane at Taqueria 10 de 10, which opened at the end of February.

This spot from co-owners and brothers Raul and Luis Esquer and their business partner Roy Servan can be found inside the ReyRey cocktail bar. The entrance can be found in the alley behind the bar. The owners chose furniture and decor to make the space feel like a Mexican market — the white tile walls and tables embossed with the Coca-Cola logo. And they went with an open kitchen so diners can have a relationship directly with the taqueros in the kitchen, talking to them literally as they make the food.

The flavors they chose lean heavily on Northwest Mexican cuisine, referencing Baja, Tijuana, Sonora, and Sinaloa. The kitchen uses a Molina grinder that was brought from Tlaxcala to nixtamalize the corn tortillas. The flour tortillas are also made in-house, using the Esquer family recipe. The al pastor tacos and quesadillas feature meat carved from the rotating trompo al pastor machine, and an open-fire grill cooks the carne asada. The fruit of the nopal cactus is also a featured ingredient on the menu.

The idea for Taqueria 10 de 10 was born when Raul Esquer met the folks who run ReyRey, Reina Rooftop, and Epoca Roma—all in the same building. The idea to have a taco spot for bar and club goers was born to a built-in audience who now get to experience it. Of course, it’s open until 2 a.m. on Saturday nights.

Taqueria 10 de 10 is at 206 Trinity St. It is open now.
