RED ASH IN DOWNTOWN AUSTIN REOPENS AFTER FIRE LAST YEAR

Following a devastating fire in September 2023, it appears that Red Ash has quietly reopened and is taking reservations again. The Italian restaurant in downtown Austin was destroyed in an accidental fire that started with its oven ventilation system during dinner service. Despite the owner’s stated intent to close only for a week, it remained closed until now. Its website features a banner that says it is now open, and reservations are available on OpenTable.

The Parlor is in danger of closing

This pizza joint is facing the threat of losing its lease following the death of the building landlord, according to a post it made on Facebook. If it can raise the funds to buy the building by April 30, it will be able to buy it. It has started a GoFundMe campaign, with a primary focus “to help our team as long as possible, and to cover the final outstanding business expenses,” but with the hope that the Parlor will find a way to go on.

Chef Deepa Shridhar launches a cheese series

Want to learn more about cheese? Shridar is launching a series called Rasam & Cheese. A press release says it will combine “a tangy South Indian broth typically made with tamarind [rasam] with curated Cypress Grove goat cheeses.” The five courses will include complimentary pairings with RedThumb Wine, Rambler Sparkling Water, and local beers. Vegetarian options will be available for the courses as requested.

Shridhar, a Texas-born South Asian immigrant, has cooked at Dai Due and Lenoir and her now-defunct food trailer, Puli-Ra as well as being the director of wholesale at Antonelli’s Cheese Shop. Rasam & Cheese will launch on Saturday, May 18, from 4:30 to 7 p.m. at the Made in Studio at 1005 East St. Elmo Road, Building 2. Tickets are available online.

How to get your hands on a Shiny Diamond(s)

Release party alert: Independence Brewing will host a 4/20 party to celebrate the release of its seasonal brew, Shiny Diamonds. The Release the Tiger party will happen Saturday from 3 to 7 p.m. in the taproom. In a press release, the brewery says, “Shiny Diamonds is a bright, hoppy ale with notes of grapefruit and lemon, taking its name from one of the most iconic heavy metal songs, ‘Holy Diver’ by Dio.” Insert double devil horns here.

You Grill, Girl fundraiser tickets available

Grab tickets for a night of food at You Grill, Girl!, featuring all women and non-binary chefs and grillmasters. Hosted by the Austin Chapter of Les Dames D’Escoffier, the event will be held at Franklin Barbecue on Thursday, April 25, from 7 to 10 p.m. Expect grilled meats and veggies, cocktails, a tiki bar, a DJ, a disco cowgirl dance party, and a silent auction. Proceeds go to grants and scholarships for women in culinary, wine, artisanal food and beverage, and hospitality. Some participating chefs include Sarah Petmecky, Amie Brown, and Theo Nesland of Franklin Barbecue; Sarah McIntosh of Epicerie; Laura Sawicki of Oseyo; and Meredith Shaffer of Camp Lucy.
