THE COOKIES THAT STARRED IN ‘ONLY MURDERS IN THE BUILDING’ ARE COMING TO SAN DIEGO

Locals will soon get to sample a viral dessert that played a prominent part in season three of Hulu’s ‘Only Murders in the Building’ — most memorably in the scene where Paul Rudd’s character ruefully gobbles a cookie decorated with the logo of the cursed ‘Death Rattle’ production. Name-dropped throughout the show, Schmackary’s is a real-life, East Coast-based cookie company that’s establishing a hub here in San Diego.

Founded by aspiring actor Zachary Schmahl in his Hell’s Kitchen apartment, Schmackary’s opened a storefront in NYC’s Theatre District in 2012 where it’s known as the “official cookie of Broadway” and often makes limited edition themed cookies to tie in with big stage performances. The shop’s menu rotates through more than 100 flavors, including bestsellers like Funfetti, Cookie Dough, Sweet Corn, and Caramel Apple Crisp.

The brand, which started franchising in 2023, is working with San Diegan Sharian Lott to bring its cookies out west. The daughter of Dorothy Smith, the first Black woman elected to office in San Diego, and the mother of Loren Lott, a stage and television star, Lott is currently working to identify a first storefront location in San Diego that will be paired up with a production facility designed to supply the West Coast with Schmackary’s cookies.
