THE FAST-CASUAL BOWL SPOTS ARE CANNIBALIZING EACH OTHER

That’s a wrap for By Chloe. The vegetarian restaurant chain, which rebranded as Beatnic after a lawsuit from its founder, was sold last year to another fast-casual chain, Inday, according to a spokesperson. As part of the acquisition, the six remaining Beatnic locations will be turned into Indays, including one at Rockefeller Center opening on May 1, and another in Boston, which will mark Inday’s first expansion outside of New York. When all of the restaurants are converted, Inday will have 11 locations in total.

Beatnic, founded by celebrity vegan chef Chloe Coscarelli in 2015, has been struggling for years — even before its ill-advised rebrand. In 2017, Coscarelli sued her former partners, claiming she had been forced out of the company. By Chloe filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2020 and was taken over by new owners, who rebranded as Beatnic.

End of an era for a Manhattan gay bar

The Boiler Room has closed in the East Village after 30 years. Don’t worry: The iconic gay bar is reopening around the corner at 45 Second Avenue, between Second and Third streets. According to EV Grieve, the Boiler Room decided to move after a court battle with its landlord over back rent during the pandemic. The space is being taken over by Jon Neidich, the owner of Le Dive and the Nines.

East Hampton v. Zero Bond

East Hampton is willing to go to war over Zero Bond. The private social club, which has attracted celebrities like Kim Kardashian and Taylor Swift, was looking to take over the historic Hedges Inn, open in East Hampton since 1873. To make that impossible, officials proposed a restriction on “eating and drinking establishments” in historic districts that would prohibit staying open after 11 p.m., or serving food and drinks after 10 p.m. A source says Zero Bond will not be opening in the Hamptons this summer.

A new brewery is coming to Brooklyn

545 Johnson Avenue, near Stewart Avenue, will be the new home of Eckhart Beer Company, a brewery specializing in European-style lagers. The 8,000-square-foot space will have a 100-seat taproom with a full kitchen when it opens this summer, according to a listing on Culinary Agents, a hiring platform. Eater has contacted the brewery for more.
