WE’VE GOT SOME GOOD NEWS FOR SEATTLE DOUGHNUT FANS

One of the emerging trends of 2024 is burgeoning Seattle restaurateurs opening second or third locations of their businesses. To wit: This week Dough Joy, a vegan doughnut shop with locations in West Seattle and Capitol Hill, announced on Instagram that it would be opening a third spot in Ballard.

It’s been a quick rise, pun intended, for the plant-based, yeast-raised doughnut shop. Christopher Ballard and Sean Willis started it as a truck in 2021, followed that up with a KickStarter campaign to open a Capitol Hill store, and soon followed that up with a West Seattle location. The Ballard location will be a homecoming of sorts since that neighborhood was where the original Dough Joy truck was located.

The new doughnut shop seems to be in the former Cupcake Royale space on Market Street, which was vacated by the cupcake chain last month. Eater Seattle reached out to Dough Joy to ask about when it will open and will update this post if we here back.

In other doughnut news, the brioche specialists (no plant-based pastries here) at Doce opened their second location in South Lake Union, at 2305 Sixth Avenue. Doce opened just a year ago in Fremont but has already attracted rave reviews — and the occasional line — for its over-the-top, sometimes Latin American–inspired creations.

The Station expands into Columbia City

The Station, a beloved Beacon Hill coffee shop that couples Fulcrum beans with great breakfast items like biscuits smothered in chorizo gravy, has officially opened its second location in Columbia City, according to the South Seattle Emerald. Co-owner Luis Rodriguez complained to the paper about a slow permitting process, but with that behind him he and wife and co-owner Leona Moore-Rodriguez can focus on giving Columbia City residents a badly needed space to unwind. “It gives me a lot of pride and joy to be a Black and Brown business, hiring Black and Brown kids around our neighborhood and have our kids from these neighborhoods having a place where they can sit down,” Rodriguez told the Emerald. “They don’t have to buy anything, they can just come here and chill and relax and feel safe.”

Brian Clevenger’s Haerfest is set to open next week

Didn’t we tell you that 2024 is full of business owners adding locations? On Tuesday, April 23, Brian Clevenger’s General Harvest group will open its newest restaurant, Haerfest. “The space will stay true to what Clevenger does best, offering a selection of handmade pastas, fresh local vegetables, and a variety of seafood and protein dishes,” reads the press release. When you’ve found a formula people love, in other words, why change it up? The restaurant will be at 4106 Stone Way in Fremont, in the same mixed-use building that houses Doce.

It’s Pizza Week!

If you look at the menus that restaurants are featuring for Seattle Restaurant Week and think, “Um, $35 for dinner is supposed to be a bargain? Must be nice in that tax bracket,” there’s an alternative. The Stranger has organized a Pizza Week from April 15 to 21, during which 12 pizzerias are offering hot, cheesy deals: $4 slices and $25 whole pies. Go here to see the list of participating restaurants, which includes such notable spots as Stevie’s Famous in Burien and Ballard Beer Box.
