Love ordering a poke bowl at your local Japanese takeout spot? This recipe has everything you love about those, but in a simplified salad form. All it takes is a few quality ingredients like fresh mango, creamy avocado, and sushi-grade tuna, and you’ll be on your way to a versatile dish that is as satisfying on its own as it is paired alongside all your favorite BBQ and summertime mains. Here’s what you need to know:
The fish:When your list of ingredients is so short, you’re really going to want to make sure you start with the best of the best, and that means seeking out high quality fish that’s labeled “sushi- or sashimi-grade”. These labels aren’t legally defined, so when in doubt, talk to your fishmonger or buy your fish from another reputable source. Still worried about it? Take note from our Caribbean Cobb salad or our shrimp & mango salad and pair these flavors with cooked seafood instead.
The fruit (and other add-ins!):Speaking of changing it up—we love this with mango, but pineapple or other fruits could also be great. Want something a little more filling? Try this over rice or your favorite grain, or add in some steamed edamame for even more protein. You could also pair it with other summery mains to make a complete meal—swap it out for the cucumbers in our caramelized beef with rice, pair it with some yakitori skewers for easy lunch, or just serve it alongside some homemade sushi for the full takeout experience, right from home.
